Metal Braces

Metal braces use brackets and archwires to guide teeth through a planned sequence of movement. They remain a useful fixed option for many orthodontic cases, but the dentist must assess the bite, gum health, tooth roots and existing restorations before recommending them.

Assessment and suitability

The dentist reviews crowding, spacing, bite relationships and the health of the teeth and gums. Photographs, scans or X-rays may be taken when indicated. If cavities or active gum disease are present, they may need attention before braces are fitted.

What treatment involves

The brackets are fitted to the teeth and connected with archwires. Regular review visits allow the dentist to monitor movement and adjust the appliance. The number of visits and the total treatment time depend on the plan and how your teeth respond.

Living with fixed braces

Brush around every bracket and use interdental cleaning aids as instructed. Follow the clinic's advice about hard, sticky or damaging foods. Contact the clinic if a bracket or wire becomes loose, or if pain and gum swelling do not settle as expected.

Retention after braces

When active movement is complete, retainers are used to help maintain the result. The type of retainer and wearing schedule are explained by the dentist. Ongoing checks may be recommended because teeth can move over time.
